Managing Stress & Staying Happy during the Holidays!

December 25, 2017

To all my Latinx and Boricua’s reading this, Merry Christmas Y Feliz Navidad! I hope you sang and danced every parranda in the book! This week was long, productive, and fun! Let’s start off by unraveling all the excitement that went down this week! There were a series of eventful challenges, successes, & failures, but I took every obstacle and tackled it. The theme of this week’s blog is how to manage stress once and for all! Y’all I’M NOT PLAYING! Stress can have some detrimental consequences on the mind, body, and soul! However, after a crazy sequence of memorable occurrences, I’m here to teach you how to cope with stress. You may be asking yourself, how does stress tie in with health, wellness, & fitness? Stress causes sickness, pain, inflammation, weight gain, overindulgence in food, (y’all know I love food) and other damaging effects. Consequently, colds and flus often show up. Highlights of this week include: sleep deprivation, the flu, my jobs phenomenal Christmas party, a holiday bonus, & a fun filled holiday in Georgia!

My older brother and his wife just moved to Georgia. Upon arriving in Georgia, my brother and sister-in-law surprised me with an appointment with a well known reflexologist. Let me start off by explaining what reflexology is: Reflexology, known as zone therapy, involves the application of pressure to the feet and hands. The idea is that the pressure in pivotal parts of your hands and feet have an effect on other parts of your body. Reflexologists believe blocking of energies can prevent healing. I’m not going to lie, when I went in to see that little viejito, I had an open mind but was also nervous & a little skeptical. I’ve been curious about Reflexology but I had never actually tried it. My advice to you is don’t knock it before you try it. Try everything! In that 2 hour consultation, I felt like my little foot was going to fall off; those pressure points hurt! However, I learned a great deal more about holistic practices and myself. This gentleman made me aware of my subconscious stress levels and sugar cravings. As humans, we try to do the most! As a result, we neglect self care, internalize our problems, and attempt to be super humans. Perhaps we get too caught up in routine, finances, or the stressors that come with a 9am-5:00pm.

Adulting and dealing with stress is something that we all go through. When life throws us these curve balls, we have the power to allow it to take over ourselves, or take control of the situation. Babal’s article couldn’t have stated it any better, “We can eliminate the stress, escape from the stress or change how we respond to stress. There are no stressful situations-only stressful reactions.” (Babal, December 2017) This week, for several reasons, life became heavy and subsequently, I had a nasty ass fever, nausea, and fatigue. You know what that is? THE FLU! Hahaha. I didn’t let these setbacks take over me. I combined the majestic wonders of western medicine and holistic practices into my life. That meant taking my sick ass to work, drinking ginger tea, consuming westen prescribed drugs, and getting lots of rest. I had to recuperate for my Atlanta weekend trip and our company’s fabulous Christmas party. I was playing no games!

There are several ways that you can cope with and manage stressful situations. This is something that we have to be mindful of, because if we do not deal with trauma, obstacles, & other stressors that life throws at us, it will take a toll on your body, mind, and soul. When stress is prolonged it can invite diseases and in extreme cases, it can kill! I don’t want to worry you mi gente. Below, I will list a guide to help you manage stress, stay healthy, and live in harmony. Follow these simple rules and do what makes you happy. What I am asking you to do is not easy, hell, it might even be considered selfish. I am begging you to take that leap of faith and be selfish. Put yourself first once and for all.

Practice Self-Care

Before we dive into this, have you asked yourself if you have forgotten to take care of you, the person who matters most? If you’re thinking that the answer is yes, I encourage you to take a step back and reflect on what really makes you happy. Self-care can mean different things to different people. Common practices include but are not limited to: prayer, meditation, breathing exercises/techniques, physical exercise, dancing, manicures, pedicures, ect. While writing this, I understand that self-care is a privilege, and not everyone has the time, money, or ability to do this. Am I right? I am also conscious that the holidays are extremely hard for some people who do not have loved one’s present in their life. As difficult as it may be, a part of self-care is checking in with your emotions and knowing, it’s okay to not be okay. Channeling those emotions allows us to heal and gives us the power to take care of ourselves. Faith can move mountains when we find ourselves battling these baggages.

“Take control and do what makes your soul happy.”

– Feli

It is up to us how we choose to take care of ourselves. Practices that I love are prayer, meditation, journaling, exercise, and running a hot bath. Exercise is my ultimate stress reliever. It enhances my mood, increases my productivity, and reduces my stress levels.

Protect your Energy!

Surround yourself with people who love you and want you to succeed. Too often, people are trying to fit in with everyone else. I am asking you to be bold and stand out from the crowd. Chances are, they are narrow minded and you are awesome! Own that authenticity and protect your energy. Do not be afraid to say no to an invitation that you feel uncomfortable with. We are grown ass adults and owe zero explanations. With that being said, be mindful of who you allow into your inner circle. It is okay to be selective. Believe this, it is a privilege to be your friend. Spend time with individuals who challenge you as a person, stimulate your mind, and exasperate your soul. I don’t know about you guys, but I am not settling for anything less than that!

Eliminating toxicity:

Start focusing on your successes instead of your failures. Whatever you believe in, whether it is God, Allah, the universe, science ect. hold on tight and manifest the blessings that are about to come into your life. Embracing your blessings and future endeavors signifies the ability to cut out any toxicity from your life. Focus on the whats and not what ifs. Find positive people and surround yourself with them. Be selective. You are allowed to be. Remove any thoughts of fear and anxiety. You might be asking yourself, how in the world do I do that? Easier said than done, but not impossible. The power of the mind is incredible when you surrender yourself to it. When you are so focused on the pursuit of your goals, you don’t have time for negative people or naysayers. So I leave you with this my friends, slaying those goals leads to cutting out all forms of negativity.

Control your cravings!

Stress increases food cravings, especially around the holiday season. Holidays can be stressful as well, with the pressure of buying everyone the perfect gifts, completing deadlines for work, visiting families, ect. You may find yourself craving more sugar. Now you know my rule, never regret your last meal and never skip a Monday workout, so I would never tell you to cut or eliminate any foods from your life. Be mindful that we can always hit the reset button. Setbacks are not failures mi gente. Conscious eating is critical on this fitness journey, but it is also important to see how stress can inhibit some of those old habits. Eat your cookies with no regrets, drink that coquito, and accept that overindulgence may happen this season. However, introduce small easy steps to make our decisions more health conscious. I drank plenty of liquor this weekend, nonetheless, I tried to be more conscious of drinking water between my drinks. Drinking more water, eating veggies with those holiday meals, and saying no to the midnight cravings are small ways we can control our food cravings.

Travel any chance you can get!

Traveling is excellent for the soul. Frequent vacationing is something that can inhibit stress. This holiday season, I decided to fly to Georgia to be with my brother Rodney and my sister-in-law Leticia. My oh my, what a weekend. Make that impulsive decision, buy that plane ticket, travel to the next city, because life is short! Traveling allows you to learn something new. I realized through the practice of reflexology that I was internalizing loads of stress which subsequently caused me to get sick. I also was reintroduced to organic healthy foods by my beautiful sis, Lety. She reminded me of the importance and spiritual benefits of being properly nourished. She even taught my ass how to cook. Never, in a million years would I have imagined that I would cook meals from scratch until this weekend. Having fun and living in the moment allows us to eliminate the toxicity that stress causes. Stay blessed mi gente and Merry Christmas from the Arzuaga’s!

I’ll leave you with with this, KELLY McGonigal’s TED Talk couldn’t have said it any better,

“When you change your mind about stress, you can change your body’s response to stress.”

– (McGonigal, 2013)

Don’t let stress control you, you control stress.
